Fast food for CalFresh clients?

The Fresno County Board of Supervisors voted 3-2 to allow some CalFresh recipients to use their EBT cards to buy fast food. Our former colleague Delfino Neira, now director of Fresno County DSS, explained that the program is for those living in hotels, or even tents, with limited access to kitchens and refrigeration. The program is expected to be underway in a few months.

Restaurants can apply with the state to participate in the program. Proponents say restaurants approved should be those with the healthiest food, such as vegetable-rich sandwiches rather than greasy burgers. The program was brought to local officials' attention by Subway franchisees.

Fresno isn't the only county participating in this program. Our neighbor San Luis Obispo County does too, as well as Los Angeles, San Diego, Alameda, Santa Clara, San Francisco and Sacramento.
