For National Grandparent’s Day, the Latino Elder Outreach Network (LEON) celebrated their third annual Dia De Los Abuelos, the Independent reports. The event took place on September 15, 2016 at the Carillo Recreation Center in Santa Barbara, attended by over 200 seniors and including music, performances, prizes and lunch. It was sponsored by the Santa Barbara Foundation, The City of Santa Barbara, The Gildea Foundation, the Community Action Commission, Visiting Nurse and Hospice of Santa Barbara, The County of Santa Barbara, Area Agency on Aging, and Easy Lift Transportation.
LEON is a collaborative group meeting monthly to coordinate efforts on behalf of Latino elders. The group's goal is to encourage and empower the Latino community, and to educate the public about the needs of, and resources available to, Latino elders. LEON operates umbrella of the Adult and Aging Network (AAN). Coordinated by Barbara Finch of DSS, AAN is comprised of agencies serving seniors in our area, and advises the Santa Barbara County Board of Supervisors on senior issues.
