An article in Governing titled "Immigrants cost taxpayers, then pay more than most" reports on two studies, one by the Urban Institute and a larger one by the National Academies of Science (NAS), which find that first-generation immigrants are costlier to state and local governments than native-born adults, but that over time those effects reverse, with second-generation forward making state and local governments more money than native-born Americans, making immigration a long-term net positive for taxpayers. The higher initial cost is due to larger first-generation immigrant families (having .52 vs. .36 children per adult).  http://www.governing.com/topics/finance/gov-new-research-immigrants-good-for-economy.html?utm_term=Immigrants%20Cost%20Taxpayers%2C%20Then%20Pay%20More%20Than%20Most&utm_campaign=Immigrants%20Cost%20Taxpayers%2C%20Then%20Pay%20More%20Than%20Most&utm_content=email&utm_source=Act-On+Software&utm_medium=email

We knew from a Cal Lutheran study several years ago that ARRA ("the stimulus") was effective and efficient in our area in pushing back against the recession. This piece says the same was true on a nationwide level--and that it also provides lessons on how to effectively manage a program when a new administration does not yet have their Cabinet and bureaucracy in place ("how Washington, in partnership with states, cities, counties, nonprofits and the private sector, was able to craft an effective program and make it work within two years").
