Under a new Public Safety Power Shutdown (PSPS) plan, Edison may preemptively shut off power in some areas during extreme weather conditions, to reduce the risk of their equipment sparking a fire. Downed power lines are a significant source of wildfire risk. Residents will have several days notice if a shutdown is possible, and can sign up for status alerts. Once shut off, power will not be restored until the conditions have passed and inspection teams have personally surveyed all potentially affected lines and equipment. This KEYT story and this later Independent story have more details.
DSS managers are currently drafting contingency plans in order to be prepared in the event of a PSPS shutdown.
