May is CalFresh Awareness Month. Throughout this month the Santa Barbara Public Library, our CalFresh outreach partners at UCSB and the Foodbank, and others are coming together to draw attention to causes of, and solutions to, food insecurity. There are many activities scheduled throughout the month including a talk by author Megan Carney (whose book
The Unending Hunger is based on ethnographic fieldwork from Santa Barbara), a panel discussion on food insecurity with representatives from local agencies, a food drive, volunteer opportunities, and more. This
Noozhawk article does a good job of rounding them up.
