Local view on categorical eligibility

USDA has announced its intention to revise the Categorical Eligibility policy that allows states to broaden the range of people who can sign up for SNAP / CalFresh. These changes could reduce the number of residents eligible for CalFresh.

A piece in CalMatters, reprinted in several papers around the state, shows how these proposed changes to categorical eligibility could hurt working families in high-cost states such as California. Opinion pieces and articles opposing the change have been printed in area publications including the Lompoc Record, Pacific Standard, and VCStar.

A draft version of the rule was published in the Federal Register on 7/24/19, and residents have until September 23, 2019 to submit their input before USDA can move to enact the rule.
