ACEs and Medi-Cal

Through Medi-Cal, the state is working to support screening children for ACEs. This guest editorial disapproves. We do not post this to endorse that view, but to acknowledge its printing. Certainly there are counterpoints, such as our local network's commitment to trauma-informed care. Nobody in our network is thinking of the ACEs screen as a diagnostic tool, and nor would they be so reactive as he suggests with arbitrary cut-points, personal searches, and sending kids to foster care after an ACEs screen. The movement to Community Support may help address some of the concerns about disproportionality and conflating poverty with neglect, and introducing the HOPE framework will shift some of the emphasis away from the ACE score.
