Why horizontal integration matters

Horizontal integration (ensuring that those on CalFresh are also invited to apply for Medi-Cal, and vice-versa) and CalFresh utilization efforts (ensuring that CalFresh is offered to all who may qualify) take work, but they're worth the effort, and this information promoted today by Feeding America (the national organization of foodbanks) underlines why.

  • 66% of foodbank clients say they must choose between food and medical care. By putting a meal on the table or a doctor visit in reach, we take this terrible decision off someone's plate. (Video)
  • People who can't afford nutritious foods like fresh fruits, vegetables, whole grains and lean meats consume more processed food high in fat, sugar, and sodium, increasing risk for chronic conditions like diabetes, high blood pressure and more. Medical care without food aid can address the symptom but not the problem. (Story)
  • Medical costs strain the fixed income of a senior--but particularly for those with conditions like diabetes, eating healthy is an important part of treatment, and even $20 in monthly CalFresh benefits makes that easier to do. (Story)
  • Mounting evidence suggests that hunger not only negatively impacts health outcomes for patients, but also raises costs for the health care system. (Story)
