Over the past decade, hospital emergency rooms have seen as much as a tenfold increase in admissions of children who have attempted suicide, or say they want to. After the physical injury is addressed, children with private insurance can be diverted to mental health crisis residential treatment facilities to get better, but children with Medi-Cal cannot because there isn't currently a mechanism to fund it. If approved, AB 226 would change that.
